New Philadelphia, Ohio is founded by John Knisley, a business owner from Pennsylvania.
15 Mar 1808
New Philadelphia Becomes County Seat
Knisley aids in creation of Tuscarawas County. His influence and contributions help establish New Philadelphia as the County Seat.
16 Jan 1828
Lateral Canal Company Founded
Company creates canal to connect Tuscarawas River with the Ohio-Erie Canal opening up trade routes.
25 Oct 1882
Courthouse Dedicated
New Philadelphia courthouse has cornerstone ceremony. Building still operates today and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
09 Sep 1900
New Philadelphia Public Schools Founded
Begins with 5 schools and over 1,200 students.
01 Jun 1907
Tuscora Park Opens
Crowd of over 1,000 comes to enjoy the new park with many amusements and activities available.
24 Sep 1912
Welcome to Our City Sign Lit
Famous downtown New Philadelphia sign lit as part of homecoming celebration.
23 Mar 1913
1913 Flood
Devastating flood brings the area to a halt with over $1 Million in property damage.
07 Feb 1937
Tuscarawas County Library Dedicated
Library originally under the Board of Education, but in 1948 the Library District was established to manage it.
